About ITEP
Back
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a forward-thinking initiative developed in line with the goals set by India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Aimed at transforming the country's education landscape, NEP 2020 emphasizes the need to reform teacher education by promoting a more unified, multidisciplinary, and professional framework. It acknowledges the essential role of teachers in shaping a successful education system and calls for a more rigorous and integrated approach to teacher preparation.
ITEP is a four-year undergraduate programme crafted for students aiming to enter the teaching profession. It combines a general education in subjects like arts, science, commerce, or social science with professional training in education. This structure allows future educators to gain both academic knowledge and teaching expertise concurrently. According to NEP 2020, by the year 2030, this four-year integrated B.Ed. degree will become the standard qualification for teachers and will be offered through multidisciplinary higher education institutions.
A key goal of ITEP is to overcome the limitations of earlier teacher education systems, which often lacked coherence and standardization. By offering a unified curriculum, ITEP aims to produce skilled, ethical, and reflective teachers who are well-prepared to meet the needs of diverse learners in modern classrooms. The curriculum is designed to prioritize foundational skills, inclusive education, multilingualism, digital competency, experiential learning, and traditional Indian knowledge-reflecting the key educational reforms advocated by NEP 2020.
The programme also emphasizes practical learning through internships, fieldwork in schools, and community engagement, providing students with real-world teaching experience. Moreover, it supports ongoing professional growth through research opportunities and innovative teaching strategies.
Administered by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in collaboration with universities and multidisciplinary institutions, ITEP is being introduced in selected central and state universities, with plans for broader implementation nationwide. By integrating academic and professional education into a cohesive model, ITEP represents a major step toward elevating the standards and appeal of teacher education in India.
